Mrs. Catherine Jenkins Johnson
October 15, 1919 – April 30, 2023
Catherine Jenkins Johnson was born on October 15, 1919, and departed from this life on
Sunday, April 30, 2023, at the age of 103. To God be the Glory!
Catherine was the second eldest daughter of the late Mr. Jessie Jenkins, Sr., and Mrs. Isabelle
Robertson Jenkins. Her mother died at a young age, she was raised by her father and her
stepmother, the late Mrs. Lear Jenkins, whom she affectionately called, “Mama”. Catherine
grew up in Screven County and attended public school. She joined Ogeechee Branch Baptist
Church, Newington, GA, at a young age where she later served as ‘Mother of the Church’.
Catherine was married to Amos Johnson in 1941 and they were blessed with four wonderful
children. Catherine was an excellent cook. She would cook Sunday dinner and any and
everyone who wanted a good meal was welcome at her table. At Thanksgiving and Christmas,
family members from as far away as New York always made a special stop by her house for
some of her delicious sweet potato pie and fruitcake. She was very meticulous about her
appearance. She especially loved keeping her home clean. Catherine loved to decorate her home for Christmas. Her home was always the gathering spot for not only her children, but grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many of her great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Six Brothers: Robert Jenkins, Sippie Jenkins,
McKenzie Jenkins, Charlie Jenkins, Jessie Jenkins, Jr., and Tommy Jenkins. Seven Sisters:
Jessie Mae Jenkins, Elease Dukes, Rosa James, Burdell Jenkins, M. Lucille Doe and Easter
Jenkins.
She leaves to cherish her loving and devoted children Inez Johnson, Shirley J. Cooper (Robert),
Johnnie Johnson Blount and John C. Johnson (Janet) all of Sylvania, Georgia. Eight cherished
grandchildren: Larry Foy (Charita) of Statesboro, GA; Darren Foy and Tammi Brown(Mark) both
of Sylvania, GA; Kelvin Johnson of Stone Mountain, GA; April Cooper of Statesboro, GA; Jarmel
Johnson, Monica Roberson (Jimmy) of Sylvania, GA, and Cornelius Johnson(Leah) of Panama
City, FL. A special great-granddaughter, whom she raised Desiree Foy of Savannah, GA.
Sixteen precious great-grandchildren and twelve beloved great-great grandchildren and four
great-great-great grandchildren. Three sisters: Robbie Lee Scott of Statesboro, GA; Clayzell
Bartley of Rincon, GA, and Anna Barnes (Jonathan) of Newington, GA ; a host of nieces,
nephews, other relatives, and dear friend and a special family friend, Mr. William Gardner.
