Doris Roberts McGee Obituary

The Legacy of Life

Mrs. Doris Roberts McGee

November 12, 1932 – May 01, 2025

“Death is the golden key that opens the palace of eternity.

It matters not at what hour the righteous fall asleep.

Death cannot come untimely to him who is fit to die.”

Mrs. Doris Roberts Manor McGee, 92, was born November 12, 1932, in Sylvania, Georgia, to the late Mr. Claude and Mrs. Dolly Lovett Roberts.  She was joined in holy matrimony to the late Billie McGee.  To that union, a daughter, Carla Nannette, was born.

At a young age, she joined Lovett’s Temple CME Church where she worked faithfully until its merger with Lewis Chapel CME church and her work in the vineyard continued.   In later years, she transferred her membership to Williams Memorial CME Church in Augusta, Georgia, where she worked until her health failed.

Her formal education began at Lovett Temple Elementary School (Grades 1-7). She graduated from Screven County Training School as class Salutatorian.  She received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Savannah State College. From Atlanta University [now Clark Atlanta University], she earned three degrees, Master of Arts, Master of Science in Library Science, and the Sixth Year Specialist Degree in Library Services.  From the University of Georgia, she completed course work for Director of Libraries certification.

Following graduation from Savannah State, she worked over 42 years in the Screven County School System.  She served in varying capacities as a teacher of first grade, teacher/librarian, the high school Library Media Specialist, part time system Library Director, and one-year Administrative Assistant to the Principal.

She was active with many community and professional organizations.  She was elected District One representative to the Screven County Board of Education where she served 10 years, Screven County Retired Educators, Screven County Library Board of Trustees, Screven-Jenkins Regional Library Board, CSRA EOA Inc., Head Start Policy Council, Phi Delta Kappa Georgia Southern University chapter, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., the Augusta Branch of the National Association of University Women, Screven County Planning and Zoning Commission, life member of Georgia Association of Retired Educators, Beulah Chapter #116 Order of the Eastern Star, Prince Hall affiliate, and others.

She enjoyed reading, listening to music, window shopping, and traveling.

She was preceded in death by her parents and five brothers Curtis, Cleo, Eunice, Claude Jr., and Carl Roberts. She transitioned from this life to eternity at the home and in the loving care of her daughter and son-in-law in Augusta, GA, on May 01, 2025.

Doris will be sadly missed and cherished with loving memories by her devoted daughter: Carla McGee Royal (Stanley) and her grandson, Samuel Elliott Royal; also, her nieces and nephews Myron R. Roberts, Twyla R. Wilson (Joe), Richard A. Roberts (Coressa), Melissa R. Dean (Michael), Sherri R. Armstead (Arcanas), and a host of cousins, other relatives, and sorrowing friends.
