KATE AUSTIN Obituary

The Legacy of Life

Mrs. Kate L. Austin

(May 11, 1949 – September 29, 2023)

Mrs. Kate L. Austin, 74, was born on May 11, 1949, to the late Mr. James and Mrs. Lessie Mae White Lewis in Sylvania (Screven County), GA.

Her love for the Lord began at an early age when she joined the Ditch Pond Baptist Church of Sylvania, GA.  She also attended the public schools of Screven County where she graduated from Central High School in 1968.

She relocated to Chicago, IL, in 1969. In 1971, she was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Mr. Ernest Austin and to this beloved union two daughters Diyonne and Lynette (Marie) were born.

Kate began her professional career at Blue Cross Blue Shield where she worked as a claims examiner for 17 years.  She later started her own home-based daycare where she cared for many children as if they were her very own.  Kate remained vigilant in her walk with the Lord joining St. Luke COGIC where she sang on the early morning choir.   She later joined the Tree of Life Missionary Baptist Church where she was a member of the Senior choir and the Praise Team.

After returning to Sylvania, she united with the Oak Grove Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of her brother Reverend Kensley Lewis later followed by the Reverend Frank Bedford.  Because of her continued passion for singing, she became a member of the Dickey Grove Baptist Church Choir and remained a faithful member until her passing.

On Friday September 29, 2023, Mrs. Kate Lewis Austin made her final transition from earth into eternity at the East Georgia Regional Medical Center of Statesboro, GA.

She was preceded in death by her parents James and Lessie Mae White Lewis, her twin sister Katherine Lewis Husband, and two nephews, whom she loved dearly.

Survivors left to cherish her special memories and continue a beautiful legacy: include (2) Daughters: Diyonne and Lynette (Marie) Austin; (3) Sisters: Annie Marie Welch (John), Florentine (Tina) Jones, and Ollie Lee Williams (Melvin); (2) Brothers: Jimmy Lewis (Dianne) and Reverend Kensley Lewis (Runnette); (2) Very Special Aunts: Mary A.
