Obituary for Walter Roosevelt Lewis
Walter Roosevelt Lewis, a devoted husband, father, veteran, and community servant, passed
away peacefully on May 11, 2025, at the age of 91. Born on December 31, 1933, in Sylvania,
Georgia, he was the beloved son of the late Mrs. Anna Bell Lewis and Dock Lewis, Sr.
Roosevelt proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War,
embodying the principles of duty and honor. Following his military service, he pursued higher
education at Fort Valley State University, earning a degree in Forestry. He dedicated many years
to the International Longshoremen's Association in Savannah, Georgia, before returning to his
roots in agriculture, utilizing his academic background to become a devoted farmer. He found
immense joy working on his tractor, tending to his garden, and fishing in the local rivers.
A man of deep faith, Roosevelt was a lifelong member of Charlestown United Methodist Church
in Sylvania, where he actively participated in church activities and community outreach. Known
for his kind-heartedness and generosity, he never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a
helping hand to anyone in need.
Roosevelt was united in holy matrimony with the late Rose Faye Lewis, and together they
nurtured a loving family. He is survived by his children: Myra Lewis Hilton of Sylvania, GA;
Crandall Lewis (Elsie) of Lawrenceville, GA; the late Julian Lewis; Sabrina Taylor Lewis of
Mobile, AL; Tonia Lewis Moore of Statesboro, GA; Dwayne Taylor (Sandy) of Pooler, GA;
Rosezell Cusack of New York, NY; Jacqueline Rose (Tony) of Valrico, FL; Urssula Jones of
Sylvania, GA; Xavier Lewis of Greenville, SC; and Consuelo Lewis Hodge (Paige) of
Covington, GA.
He is also survived by his siblings: Marian Brown and Margery Rogers of Sylvania, GA. He was
preceded in death by his siblings: James Lewis, Alma Spenser, Geraldine Peters, Julian Lewis,
Andrew Lewis, Dock Lewis, Lula Lewis, and Casper Lewis.
Walter Roosevelt Lewis’s legacy continues through his 26 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren,
7 great great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever
cherish his memory.
Roosevelt's life was a testament to love, service, and faith. He will be deeply missed by all who
had the privilege of knowing him.
